GPS tracking watchThe month of June raises awareness of preventable health problems for males. Early detection and treatment of certain diseases can help prolong life. As men and women age, they are more susceptible to health conditions that may become chronic or prove fatal.

What are some of the most common diseases that affect men’s health?

1. Cancer

After skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common form of this disease in men. According to the Mayo Clinic, ways to reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Exercising for 30 minutes a day

The second leading cause of cancer-related death in men is colorectal cancer. Colonoscopy exams are essential after the age of 50 to check for any abnormalities in the colon.

2. Heart Disease

The most common cause of death among Americans is heart disease. This serious health concern can affect men 10 to 15 years sooner than women, making the condition more fatal for men than women. Per the American Heart Association, protect your body’s most vital organ by:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Eating healthy
  • Managing other chronic conditions
  • Reducing stress levels
  • Limiting alcohol intake
  • Staying active daily

3. Obesity

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 40 percent of adults suffer from obesity. The health effects of being overweight can be devastating. The condition increases risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes and other serious problems. To prevent obesity, Stanford Health Care recommends:

  • Increasing activity levels
  • Eating full daily servings of fruits and vegetables
  • Drinking water, rather than sugary drinks

4. Sexual Health Problems

Testosterone is a male sex hormone, naturally produced in the testes. Low levels of testosterone have been linked to a variety of other health complications, including:

  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Depression

These chronic illnesses can not only lower life expectancy, but also quality of life. Males with “Low T” should see a doctor to address stalled production.
