At West Hartford Health & Rehabilitation Center, our skilled nursing facility features a state-of-the-art dementia neighborhood. Our staff is extensively trained by the Dementia Care Professionals of America® and recently re-educated by the Alzheimer’s Association to treat individuals with memory loss for a variety of causes, including Alzheimer’s disease.

We understand the day-to-day stresses of caring for a loved one who has been plagued by a progressive disease like Alzheimer’s. Providing superior care services of the highest quality is one of our core values.

How do we care for residents who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease?

Examining the Disease

nurse helping older woman walkAlzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, negatively impacts your loved one’s memory, behavior and ability to think. It is more than simple memory loss; Alzheimer’s is the continual malfunction and death of brain cells. Unfortunately, there is no reversal or cure of the disease yet and Alzheimer’s remains a leading cause of death in America.

Risk Factors of Alzheimer’s

Many people believe that Alzheimer’s is a natural effect of aging; however, the disease is caused by our genes. If your family member inherits risk genes, there is an increased chance of developing Alzheimer’s. On the other hand, inheriting deterministic genes guarantees the development of this deadly disease. Alzheimer’s affects up to five percent of young individuals, known as early-on set. The remaining 95 percent are age 65 or older.

Alzheimer’s Treatment at Our Facility

When Alzheimer’s disease is detected early, your loved one can receive the benefits of skilled nursing care sooner. At our facility, we have cared for residents experiencing the early symptoms of irritability and depression as well as the later symptoms of frustration, aggression and hallucinations. Our 30-bed dementia neighborhood is a secure environment, offering a wandering alert system and anti-slip floors among other state-of-the-art features.

The Snoezelen Room

Snoezelen is a Dutch therapy method for cognitive disorders developed several decades ago in Holland. High levels of therapeutic stimuli are used to soothe individuals suffering from a development disability. Snoezelen Rooms are often used in dementia and Alzheimer’s care.

In general, sensory therapy is known to help calm agitated behavior. Our private room at West Hartford Health & Rehabilitation Center is multi-sensory, with different colors, sounds and smells. The calming environment is meant to relax our residents as well as help develop trust with their caregivers. The recognition of different sights and sounds around them also works to prevent the senses from deteriorating further.

Our facility takes pride in offering skilled dementia and Alzheimer’s care to individuals and their families. Trust our experience to reduce your own stress and improve the quality of life of your loved one by considering admission to West Hartford Health & Rehabilitation Center today.
