home automationAccording to Juniper Research, more than 50% of American homes have voice-enabled smart speakers like the Amazon Echo. As artificial intelligence (AI) technology continues to evolve and grow in popularity, we can accomplish more by doing much less. Right now, that includes asking Alexa to give a weather report, turn on music and set reminders. Could there be future benefits for the senior community?

We explore 3 possible uses of AI technology for seniors.

1. Decrease Fall Risk

As we age, falls become more common and the consequences more serious. Some nursing homes and senior living communities across the country are using artificial intelligence to help prevent the occurrence of falls. Taking patient history and the frequency of calls to nurses into consideration, staff can predict which patients need additional monitoring at specific times of the day to help prevent falls.

2. Keep Seniors at Home

There is also a possibility that artificial intelligence could keep aging individuals in their homes for longer. With the ability to monitor movement, behavior and vital signs through smart technology, families may feel more comfortable with mom or dad living alone. If the senior wanders outside the home or experiences a fall, emergency responders or a caregiver can be alerted.

3. Prevent Accidents at Home

Has your aging loved one become forgetful? If the oven is often left on or the front door frequently left unlocked, AI could help. Currently, smart technology exists to help remind you to complete important tasks around the house. A sensor will alert your senior when something important is forgotten – and can even remotely operate some devices!
